Gimme Five!

Gimme Five!On the 5th anniversary of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative to combat childhood obesity, she appeared on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” along with some of the All Stars from “So You Think You Can Dance” and performed a dance with them and Ellen to the Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars hit, “Uptown Funk” (see video below).

She has also started a social media campaign asking celebrities and regular folks alike to list five things that they are doing to live healthy with the hashtag #GimmeFive.  She has gotten responses from the likes of Beyoncé, Ryan Seacrest, Nick Jonas, and even the astronauts on the International Space Station.

This initiative, while originally geared towards children, could easily be expanded to include everyone, including our senior loved ones.  Being healthy and getting up and moving is beneficial at any age and on multiple levels.  It improves both physical and psychological health, and can slow down decline over time.

The Gimme Five Challenge could inspire our seniors to get moving also, which could improve not just their health but their mood as well.  We tend to be happier when we feel better, and we feel better when we are more active.  So let’s encourage all of those around us to get moving and “gimme five!”
