Christmas Gift Ideas for the Senior in Your LifeSometimes it can be difficult shopping for your grandmother or great uncle. Their needs and wants can be very different from others in your life. Should I buy them something practical or fun? Store bought or homemade? We have some ideas to help you shop for your senior loved one during the holidays.

iPad or tablet – a lot of these devices nowadays are made perfectly for seniors. They have touch pad screens and games and puzzles made just for elders.

These are some of the best tablets on the market for seniors, according to Techriggs.com:

  • ASUS VivoTab RT TF600T-B1-GR
  • Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2
  • Matricom® G-Tab
  • Kindle Fire HDX 8.9? Tablet
  • Apple iPad MD510LL/A that comes with retina display

Gift basket – include items such as slippers, books by their favorite authors, blanket or throw, bath robe, crossword puzzles, Bible, inspirational books, calendar, coffee mug, lotions, their favorite sweets, homemade cards, and towels.

Gift certificates – to their favorite restaurants, grocery store, pharmacy, or department stores. Even better idea is to take them on a shopping spree and help them pick out the items they need.

Photo album or scrapbook – get together with the grandchildren and others in the family and put together a special photo album and/or scrapbook for them. Include pictures from past holidays, weddings, or other special events in their life. Also add special birthday, Christmas, and thank you cards they’ve received over the years, as well as invitations to parties and weddings.

Health and fitness – meet with a nutritionist, dietitian, or naturopathic physician who specializes in senior health to customize your loved ones’ health, nutrition and fitness plan.

Clothes – they may need socks, sweaters, slippers, pajamas, or underwear. Younger people don’t like to receive these types of gifts but older adults really appreciate them.

Special trip or vacation – a lot of seniors love cruises, even if it’s just a day cruise around a lake or river. Take them to their favorite restaurant or to church. Take them on a site seeing tour to a location they’ve been wanting to see for a long time. Or you can take them to visit friends they haven’t seen in many years. Please consult with their physician first to make sure it’s okay for them to travel, especially if it’s an overnight trip.

Whatever you decide to buy, make, or do for your senior loved one during the holidays, please make sure it’s something they will enjoy and it won’t overwhelm them. It’s important you are sensitive to their special needs and consider their feelings. And more important than anything else, spend a lot of time with them during the holidays, and all year long, they will appreciate that gift more than any other.
