Routine Medical Tests for SeniorsAt Assisted Living by Unlimited Care Cottages we like to keep you – our community, friends, and residents’ family members – informed on health and medical issues facing seniors today. This includes routine medical screenings and exams.

There are many tests and preventive measures that are offered today for people over the age of 65. These procedures can be helpful for determining any current or future problems.

However, not all of these tests may be necessary for each person and some of them may pose a risk for certain people. We advise that you and/or your elderly loved one talk to their doctor for advice on which measure they should take for their specific medical needs.

The following is a list of some of the important screening and testing procedures for seniors:

  • Influenza vaccination
  • Pneumonia vaccination
  • Vaccination against shingles
  • Colon cancer screening
  • Breast cancer screening
  • Prostate cancer screening
  • Osteoporosis screening
  • Lipid disorder screening
  • Diabetes screening
  • Blood pressure screening
  • Smoking cessation counseling
  • Vision and hearing exams
  • Skin cancer screening
  • Cardiac stress tests
  • Thyroid function tests
  • Mental status exam
  • Peripheral vascular disease screening

Please note: These are general health maintenance guidelines. It is important to seek medical advice from your loved one’s primary physician for an individualized plan tailored to their specific health issues. There may also be additional tests they need depending on their personal history.
