We Offer the Following Senior Safety Tips To Avoid FallsSenior Safety Tips - Falls

Falls are one of the main safety concerns for seniors and their family members. One in every three adults age 65 and older falls each year, according to the National Safety council. They are also the number one cause of injury death among that same age group.

Unfortunately these falls lead to reduced movement and freedom. We provide the following safety tips to help seniors and their love ones.

  • All rooms should be well lit – add brighter light bulbs in dimly lit rooms, install lighting in dark areas of the home, and connect night lights for hallways and bathrooms.
  • Make sure all pathways are clear – remove tripping hazards such as shoes, toys, or tools. Also arrange furniture to make sure seniors can easily move around chairs or sofas and to ensure they can easily enter and exit a room.
  • Stairways or steps need to be clutter free, well lit, and have the appropriate handrails – remove shoes, clothes, and decorative objects off the stairway and surrounding area.

Often seniors’ health issues, certain prescriptions, and habits can lead to falls as well.

  • Talk to health care providers to evaluate their risk for falling.
  • Ask doctors or pharmacists for medication side effects.
  • Encourage your senior to exercise to build their strength and balance.

Fear is another factor when it comes to falls. This fear or lack of self-confidence can also lead to accidents. Exercise can help build their confidence and stability. Attending physical therapy sessions is an excellent way for seniors to learn how to safely walk with confidence and care, and it also helps with their agility.

We hope these tips help you and your family live a fall-free life. If you need more information or would like to visit one of our assisted living cottages, please contact us today.
